Regional History - Welcome to the Wisconsin Rapids, Area!
The Wisconsin are is a close -knit group of communities growing outward from the borders of the Wisconsin River. With a population of over 18,000. Wisconsin River is the lifeline of much of the supply the area, supply water for domestic and industrial use, recreational opportunities, irrigation, and hydroelectric power. A variety of stores, services and
recreational opportunities are available throughout the are.

Wisconsin Rapids, the county seat of Wood County, is a consolidation of the two early towns of Grand Rapids and Centralia; the former lying on the east side of the Wisconsin River, the latter on the west. The Indians gave to this place along the river the name of "Ad-dah-wah-gam", meaning the "two-sided rapids", as the rapids here were divided in two by a great boulder. The consolidation was effected in the spring of 1900 and the city subsequently bore the name of Grand Rapids until 1920, when its name was changed because freight and mail intended for it was frequently sent by mistake to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Wisconsin Rapids today offers mid-western charm and atmosphere while providing access to modern infrastructure and technology, abundance educational and
cultural opportunities, a mix of retail establishments and restaurants, and a stable business environment.

Our region is the home to
cranberries and coated paper. Coated paper was invented by Consolidated Papers right here in Wisconsin Rapids. The magazines, annual reports and catalogues that are a part of our everyday life are probably on paper made right here in the “Rapids.” We are pleased to have Ocean Spray completing a huge expansion to make “Craisins” in our Westside Industrial Park. And we also have Urban Processing, a family owned and specialty cranberry products business that is also a contributor to our economic base. The past year a growth in another locally owned business, Advanced Fiberglass Technologies, which specializes in fiberglass tanks for the ethanol and pharmaceutical industry. Wisconsin Rapids community is becoming very diverse and welcomes all types of business endeavors.

The Beautiful Wisconsin River runs through our community, offering
recreational opportunities all year long. Each season brings additional activities. Wisconsin Rapids Fourth of July fireworks display is the best in the area over 30,000 attend. In an all day event family and friends gather along the river for picnics and then have a great evening viewing the fireworks over the Wisconsin River.
